Glitterface
or the hazards of entering temporary utopian zones
on attending sadie lune’s “biological clock,” a queer sex art event
at femina potens, sf, may, 2011
pink crochet sperm (mag. 1 x trillion?) hang on strings
of pearls from the gallery ceiling.
i’m fed macapuno. stuffed mejool, mango.
sadie & crew start to get it on on a circle of sod sod
it sod it – “this isn’t a tv show” jupiter says,
to us, the audience. anti-heckling aunt.
(a year later, at keith hennessy’s “turbulance
(a dance about the economy)” jupiter will roll
on the floor in gold lame & discuss gentrification
& eviction as extensions of slavery)
the boom box skips on david bowie’s “changes”
“where’s yr shame
you’ve left us up to our necks in it”
light pours in the windows onto a hot heap of queer*
the boom box skips on david bowie’s “changes”
“and these children that you spit on
as they try to change their worlds”
the boom box skips on david bowie’s “changes”
“are immune to your consultations
they’re quite aware of what they’re going through”
sadie’s taking in sperm. someone slaps her thighs flush.
?sweet? danger does it? purple latex gloves snap.
if i touch it // i become it
***
later, i ride the elevator down to
mission street & the cold night
& stop into a corner store for candy
& the guy behind the counter says,
“we’re closed, fag,” & i back out
so stunned after where i’ve just
come from that i can’t respond.
he shuts & locks the door in my face.
i’d let my guard down. damn. it.
so i cross the street*
& go into another shop & the guy at the counter
says, “you have glitter on your face
what have you been doing?” & he has
this giant freckle on the end of his nose
like punctuation. it’s perfect. so i say,
“some folks have glitter; some folks
have freckles.”
* sometimes i think “queer” comes from the scottish, meaning “odd,” but other times i think it’s from proto-indo-european TWERK = “turn” or “twist,” but tonight i think it could be from the german, “quer,” meaning “cross” as in “cross the street.”
Peck’s chapbook The Pyrrhaiad, a “Queer Iliad” set in San Francisco, was published this year by Trafficker Press. Peck’s blog queercity.org explores abject lost/found queer archives. Peck lives in San Francisco & teaches at San Jose State. More: mjpeck.wordpress.com
